Lymph

  • Colorless fluid

  • Formed from tissue fluid (leaked plasma)

  • Consists of plasma and lymphocytes

  • Contains no red blood cells

The lymphatic system

  • A one way system that consists of lymph vessels and lymph nodes (glands)

  • Vessels have valves to prevent the back flow of lymph

Functions of the lymphatic system

Transport:

  • It collects tissue fluid and returns it to blood

  • Lacteals in the villi absorb lipids which are transported to the blood

Defense against disease:

  • Nodes filter plasma, removing pathogens

  • Nodes produce lymphocytes  (B and T cells)
