What is the menstrual cycle?

  • The menstrual cycle is the female monthly cycle in which an egg is released and the endometrium is shed

  • The endometrium is the innermost lining layer of the uterus

  • Menstruation is the shedding of the endometrium

Summary of the events of a typical menstrual cycle

Day 1-5:

  • Menstruation occurs, an egg is produced in the ovary by meiosis

Day 6-14:

  • The endometrium repairs in preparation for pregnancy

Day 14:

  • Ovulation occurs

 Day 14-28:

  • The endometrium thickens, the egg travels to the uterus and passes out of the body if fertilization does not occur

The fertile period

  • The fertile period is the time during a menstrual cycle when an egg may be fertilized

  • This is 2-3 days either side of ovulation
