As a substance changes state, its temperature stays constant

When a change of state happens energy is either released or absorbed
Boiling / melting
When you heat a substance and it is melting or boiling, the energy you put in is used to overcome the forces of attraction between the particles so it is not used to raise its temperature
Freezing
When you cool a substance that is condensing or freezing energy is released from the formation of new forces between particles and the temperature stops falling
